Welcome to the Orange County VAB site designed
especially for Special Magistrates.

Pursuant to Florida Statute 194.035 (1), the VAB Clerk is in the process of compiling a list of potential candidates, including both attorneys and appraisers, to serve as Special Magistrates to hear issues of property exemptions and classifications, as well as issues of real property valuations and/or tangible personal property valuation. Through its focus on commitment, the VAB strives to ensure that all proceedings are in compliance with statutory requirements, and that all taxpayers are granted specific rights by Florida law concerning VAB procedures.

With this in mind, and realizing that important changes are occurring within the Department of Revenue, we urge you to familiarize yourself with current DOR training requirements in addition to those administrative rule changes taking effect on March 30, 2010.

The following information and links will assist you while submitting your appointment application.

  • Appraiser Special Magistrates – All candidates must be either a state certified real estate appraiser and meet all experience requirements in real property valuation, or must be a designated member of a nationally recognized appraiser's organization and meet all requirements in tangible personal property valuation.

  • Attorney Special Magistrates – All candidates must be a member of the Florida Bar and meet all experience requirements in the area of ad valorem taxation.

For further information pertaining to Special Magistrate experience requirements, please refer to Florida Statute 194.035 (1),

In order to be considered for an appointment, you must submit all necessary documentation via email to the Office of the VAB at vab@occompt.com no later than April 23, 2010.  The VAB will appoint a designated number of magistrates during its Organizational Meeting on May 25, 2010, and will then notify all candidates of the Board’s final decision.  Please keep in mind that hearings will commence during the month of October.

Feel free to contact Katie Smith, VAB Supervisor, or Christina Santos, VAB Specialist, for additional information.  You may forward an email to vab@occompt.com or dial (407) 836-5447.

Good luck!
